Kitovu Hospital receives sh50m from Kabaka''s Run

KITOVU Hospital in Masaka has received sh50m from the proceeds raised from the Kabaka Birthday Run that took place last month.

The Hospital's Fistula programme director, Sister Dr. Lynch Maura, Fistula surgeon Dr. Florence Nalubega and accountant Sr. Bernadette Nalubuga, received the cheque from Buganda sports minister Henry Ssekabembe in the presence of the organising committee at Bulange on Monday.

The hospital will use the money to treat over 200 Fistula cases the hospital receives annually.

The run attracted over 8000 runners who raised sh169m from the biggest run the kingdom has ever organised.

Presenting the accountability of the funds from the run, Ssekabembe said the Buganda kingdom cabinet had zeroed in on Kitovu Hospital because of its commitment and efforts in fighting fistula in the country.

Ssekabembe said from the sh169m, they had apportioned 33% to the Kabaka’s Birthday function that was held in Butambala, 33% (sh50m) to Kitovu Hospital and 33% to the Buganda Kingdom coffers with sh15.9m going towards the organisation of the race.

The Chairman organising committee Robert Kabushenga said they were very privileged to have served as the organising committee and that they could have gained more as individuals than what the kingdom gained from the committee.

“It is with great reluctance and pain that we now give back the powers that you gave us because we became big social figures doing the voluntary work, but we are grateful for having served,” Kabushenga said.

“I would like to thank the sponsors like Airtel, Rwenzori, CBS, Vision Group and others that made it possible for us to have a run and made it possible for the kingdom to save some money for the cause of fighting fistula.

We made some mistakes in the planning, especially in the distribution of T-shirts, for that I’m really responsible and would like to apologize; next time we shall ensure that whoever is organising does not make the same mistake,” Kabushenga stated.

Buganda health minister Ben Mukwaya said over 200,000 mothers across the country suffer from this condition and requested for more of such funding in order to curb it effectively.

“I hope this money can go a long way in addressing this condition; We look forward to further partnerships as a way of addressing such health issues that affect our people so that we can have a health population for improved social-economic development,” Mukwaya said
