VP Ssekandi mourns late Mpungu

Vice President Edward Ssekandi has described the late Lawyer Paul Mpungu as a man committed to justice who inspired many in the legal practice saying his death is a big blow to the legal fraternity in Uganda

Speaking during a requiem mass for the late lawyer at Lubaga Cathedral in Kampala Tuesday, the Vice President said the late Mpungu was one person gifted with the best brains in the legal practice and always preferred dialogue whenever faced with contentious issues and challenges.

He also appreciated moral and financial support from the family, friends and the church extended to the late for the nine years he has been paralysed as a result of a stroke he suffered since 2005

The Vice President called upon the children to carry on the legacy of incorruptible character exhibited by their father and contributed sh1m towards the burial expenses.

Late Mpungu was one of the prominent lawyers at Uganda’s Independence after qualifying with a Bachelor of Laws Degree at Bombay University – India in 1961

On his return to Uganda he joined the late Benedict Kiwanuka and when the latter was appointed Uganda’s fist African Chief Justice, Mpungu took over the firm until he established his chambers in partnership with his uncle, DP stalwart Anthony Sserubiri and later Joseph Balikuddembe.

He had earlier worked as a Barrister in Bangalore – India and later as a Chief Magistrate of Masaka before retiring into private practice after falling out with the then Government because of his uncompromising character for truthfulness, equality and justice.

He suffered a stroke in 2005 following a night attack by armed assailants at his home in Rubaga that confined him to a wheel chair and a second attack that rendered him completely paralysed for the last nine years until his death on Sunday.

His remains were laid to rest today in Mpigi.
