Rotary internationally has announced a $150,000 (sh375m) package annually to support heart surgeries at Uganda heart Institute at Mulago.

This was revealed by the executive director Gift of Life International, Rob Raylman during Rotary celebrations of five years of saving lives at the institute.

Gift of Life is a Rotarian-based nonprofit charity program that was started in 1975 when Rotarians in Uganda and US sponsored a 5 year old girl for surgery in New York.

Delegates attending the 89th District Conference and Assembly in Kampala toured the Heart Institute on Wednesday.

Raylman said. “The partnership between Gift of Life and Rotarians in Uganda and abroad has been growing stronger each year. I would like to express my sincere thanks to the Rotary family for the overwhelming contributions that have seen us together make these great achievements,”

Over 500 children have successfully received life-saving Heart surgery at UHI and abroad while over 300 children have been successfully operated on by Ugandan surgeons on their own, with support from the charity organisation.
