President Yoweri Museveni has assured the people of Rwanda that they can always count on the people of Uganda in their struggle to ensure that the defeated forces will never return to the country.

“I want to congratulate the people of Rwanda and the RPF for defeating these traitors and ensuring that they will never come back to kill the people of Rwanda again. We all can witness the economic growth in Rwanda and its stabilization”, the President said.

The President was speaking at Amahoro Stadium in Kigali where he joined other regional leaders and the people of Rwanda to commemorate 20 years ever since the central African country was plunged into genocide that saw over 800,000 people, mostly Tutsis and moderate Hutus, killed by Hutu extremists in a space of 3 months in 1994.

The genocide commemoration was attended by Presidents Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya, Salva Kiir of South Sudan, Hassan Sheikh Mohammad of Somalia, the United Nations Secretary General Mr. Ban Ki-Moon and the African Union Commission Chairperson, Ms Nkosizana Dlamini Zuma.

The President, who said he was a veteran patriot in the Great Lakes’ Region, sounded a strong warning to those that hobnob with the genocidaires to know that they will have to contend with the patriotic forces that defeated the traitors with their external backers when they were still much weaker.

“We are now much stronger in every sense of the word: politically, militarily, socially and economically. The people of Rwanda should know that they can always count on the people of Uganda. Uganda is steadfast in the support for African emancipation”, he declared.

Museveni commended the Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF) for defeating the 'traitors' who, he said, created unprincipled and pseudo-contradictions among the people of Rwanda. He congratulated the Banyarwanda for transcending that phase through reliance on patriotism to defeat sectarianism and wished them continued prosperity.

President Paul Kagame noted that as his country paid tribute to the victims, both living and those who died, the people of Rwanda also saluted their unbreakable spirit to which they owed the survival and renewal of their nation.

Mr. Ban-Ki-Moon, UN Secretary General, said that the geneocide in Rwanda, was the worst ever that happened in the history of the African continent. He encouraged the people of Rwanda to continue protecting and maintaining human rights policies for the betterment of their future.
