Who is frustrating Kananura murder case?

More than one year ago, on the morning September 30, 2012, Desh Kananura, real name Andrew Kananura Kagonyera, and others allegedly murdered an employee of Panamera bar & restaurant in Naguru.

He consequently went on the run till his arrest in January 2013. He was remanded andreleased on bail, however to date, the flamboyant businessman is out and about; its business as usual while the parents of his alleged victim Badru Kateregga have relentlessly sought justice and apparently been frustrated.

Owing to the frustration Kateregga’s father, Salim Hamza Waere, 65, who had been following the case succumbed to high blood pressure.true

Waere(right)  died on March 15 last year and was buried March 16 in Kamonkoli- Nyanza, Mbale.

His deceased youthful son was callously beaten to death over a tip of sh30,000 he had received from a patron of the bar on that unforgettable Sunday morning.

Prior to his death Waere had informed this reporter that his son was murdered the very month he came to Kampala and was hired at Panamera. He had not even enjoyed his first salary.

He said his son had left him four grandchildren and looking after them had become a burden.

Presently they all do not go to school and are in the village oblivious of what their future holds.

He was also still paying tuition for some of his children and orphans under his care.

How Kateregga got to the city

Waere said a month before his son’s death he was employed in Mbale town as a sales manager, but owing to misunderstandings with some of the workers he begged him to let him travel to Kampala for greener pastures.

The old man had dissuaded his son from coming to Kampala and advised him to seek redress with his bosses regarding his working conditions. Kategeregga’s bosses had responded that they would post him to Kampala to work with a new company they were about to open.

Following a long frustrating wait with no progress on the new job Kateregga decided to travel to Kampala where, according to Waere, “God prevailed and my son got a job at Panamera bar.”

Of course unbeknownst to him, this would mark the end of his youthful life.

Kateregga, on getting the job, had excitedly called his father and promised he would send him the first salary so he would buy him a bull. That first salary never came.

The day he died I was home; my daughter Zuula Waere called and told me Kateregga had been murdered. I did not believe it at first because Kateregga was not the violent kind, but shortly after my son also called telling me the same thing.

Kateregga’s body arrived in Mbale after one day with a postmortem report showing he had succumbed so trauma due to severe beating. What shocked us was that we never even heard from his employer.

It was after his arrest which we learnt of on radio that we rushed to Kampala at City Hall Court where Kananura was charged with murder.

What hurt me most is Kananura never sent even a condolence message yet it appears the case will not be ending soon.

Ever since the case started being heard in January 2013 I travel to Kampala each month, hire a lodge just so I can be in court and follow the case but they are always postponing it.

Kananura is charged together with his brother Raymond Kananura; Cyrus Maganda , Samuel Muzulewa, and Jacob Onyango.

City Hall Grade I Magistrate Juliet Hatang remanded the accused because the offence was of a capital nature after State prosecutor Joyce Tumushabe said police was still investigating the case.

However on February 4, 2014, Justice Lameck Mukasa granted Kananura bail at sh20m.

Prior to his death, Waere, while following up on the case had been told by Hatang that it was up to police and the state to expedite investigation and send the file.

However DPP spokesperson Jane Okuo Kajuga insisted investigations were still ongoing.
