Uganda loses sh77bn to domestic violence cases

UGANDA losses shs 77 billion in compensating, trying and investigating cases of domestic violence among partners, this is according to a survey done by Makerere Institute for Economic Research Policy recently.

Domestic violence refers to both psychological and physical harm inflicted on each of the partners in a relationship.

 The survey was done together with civil society organization, Center for prevention of domestic violence (CEDOVIP) revealed during media sensitization workshop at Fairway Hotel on Wednesday.

“We were able to compute different scenarios that make us lose that money that include medical expenses for the survivors and prosecution of the perpetrators,” CEDOVIP Program officer, Richard Makumbi said.

He noted that there is lack of awareness about this Domestic Violence Act 2010 by the ministry of Gender and Ministry Justice but it’s only the Civil Society organizations that are taking over the campaign to the people.

While addressing the media Makumbi also called on the ministry of Gender and Social Development to expedite the passing of the policy on Domestic Violence Act 2010 to enable its implementation.

According to Makumbi government has failed to show commitment to the implementation of GBV Act.

Statistics indicate that up to 68 %of women in Uganda have experienced some form of violence.
