Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi has hailed the Church for its programmes that enhance spiritual and bodily development.

Ssekandi also expressed gratitude for the Church for its relentless work towards ensuring social welfare and beautiful environment for the ordinary person by starting all the necessary facilities; remarking that a large percentage of the schools in the country are church-founded.

Ssekandi was speaking as chief guest on Sunday at the official inauguration of St Mary’s Centenary Catholic Church, Kireka parish near Bweyogerere in Kampala.

The parish was formally a sub-parish of Our Lady of Africa Parish, Bweyogerere.

“At least 80% of the schools in Uganda were started by the Church and only a handful of them that included Kololo SS, Kittante, Old Kampala and Makerere College School were by the state. The Government used to come in to assist with grants for their day-to-day running of these institutions,” Ssekandi told a large congregation.

He said that with the opening of many more parishes in the country the Church was expanding its invaluable services, which also meant that many people, especially the ordinary person in the surrounding areas were likely to reap tangible results.

Ssekandi, a staunch Catholic, urged the Christians to pay their tithe obligations to the church, reminding them that they reap numerous benefits when they fulfill what is required of them.

But, he blamed some Christians who pay the insignificant amount from their large earnings; again reminding them that that does not appease God who is the giver of what they pride in.

He further urged the Christians to start developmental projects in their parishes to improve their status hailed the Comboni Missionaries who started and maintained the church from the sub-parish level until it attained its full status of an autonomous parish.

He contributed sh3m towards erecting the residential houses of the priests.
