Kutesa holds high level meeting with Chinese Premier

Uganda’s foreign affairs minister Sam Kutesa, on a seven-day working visit to China has held meetings with Li Keqiang, the prime minister of the Peoples Republic of China, and Wang Yi, the Chinese minister of foreign affairs in Beijing.

Kutesa is also scheduled to meet a cross section of senior government officials and officials of corporations.

During meetings with the Premier and minister of foreign affairs, issues of bilateral, regional and international cooperation were discussed. 

Kutesa extended Government of Uganda’s condolences to the government of the People’s Republic of China on the terrorist attack of March 1, 2014 at Kunming Railway station, and expressed solidarity with the Chinese people over the sudden and mysterious disappearance of the Malaysian Airliner, flight MH370, a majority of whose passengers were Chinese nationals.

He also thanked the government of China for the support and cooperation it has extended to Uganda over the years, which has ensured the excellent bilateral relations between our countries, characterised by the exchange of a number of high-level visits, mutual respect and partnership.

The Premier expressed strong commitment by the Government of the People’s Republic of China to further strengthen its bilateral cooperation with Uganda, especially in the areas of energy and infrastructure development. In particular, he pledged his Government’s commitment to expedite the process of supporting the development of Karuma and Isimba hydro power stations.

The Prime Minister also congratulated Hon. Kutesa upon the endorsement of his candidature by the African Union Assembly of Heads of State, for the Presidency of the 69th Session of the General Assembly, and pledged China’s support.
