Nominations for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) mayoral aspirants for Kampala kicked off on Friday amidst delays caused by the mid-morning rain.

Peter Sematimba, the first candidate to be nominated, arrived at the party’s headquarters in Kyadondo at about 11:30am yet he was expected to be o at 10:30am.

Sematimba was accompanied to Kyadondo by a small group of his supporters who kept singing his name in support. He was later nominated at about 1:40pm.

He was nominated by Omulangira Juma Kayima from Makindye and seconded by Hajat Hawa of Kabowa.

As Sematimba’s group waited for the nominations, supporters of Meddie Kasule also seeking the NRM party ticket camped in one corner of the compound. They were supposed to be nominated at 2:00pm.

But Kasule who showed interest in the seat in the 2011 general elections but was convinced to step aside had not arrived by 1:00pm.

At the same time, Nasser Ntegge Sebagala former Kampala Mayor who many thought was to appear for the NRM party nominations said he only wanted the party’s backing but not to contest on its ticket.

After the nominations, the candidates will have to compete in the party’s primaries for the flag.
