Makerere bids farewell to Msgr Kanyike

St. Augustine Catholic community Makerere University, has bid farewell to Msgr. Lawrence Kanyike after 30 years of service as a chaplain at the university catholic chapel.

In a special mass at St. Augustine chapel, the Catholic community described Kanyike as a hardworking man of God who believed in development.

The Archbishop of Kampala Archdiocese, Cyprian Kizito Lwanga who led the special mass, commended Msgr. Kanyike for the good work and growing the students into the catholic faith.

“We are very grateful for the work you have rendered in this place, may the good lord bless you, your service here has benefited many, thanks for having a big heart,” he said amid applause from the congregation.

He urged the Makerere community to equally accord the same cooperation to the incoming St Augustine Chaplain Rev. Fr. Josephat Ddungu.

In his farewell Message, Msgr. Kanyike attributed his long stay at Makerere to what he called an exceptional, professional, competent, dedicated and committed student leadership in the community.

“As I seal my days as chaplain of St Augustine community, a community that has been my home for 30 years of my life, I have been blessed with a strong student body that believes deeply in conviction as Catholics,” he said.

Kanyike commended Makerere University for the good working environment which enabled him do his work well.

 “Looking back on my years at makerere university I have no regrets, only learning experiences that  made me a better priest and chaplain, I have been lucky enough to have what I call the best job of being chaplain to the best student community in the country and I will walk away from it with great memories,” he noted.

Kanyike added that; “I will miss many things, our regular interactions, with many students, our regular picnics at Kisubi and Nabinoonya beaches and general interactions with the students”.
