SCVU will rely on wingers

SPORTS Club Victoria University’s hopes of rescuing their CAF Confederations Cup campaign this weekend could rest on wingers Peter Otai and Muwadda Mawejje.

The two offensive midfielders were both restricted to less than 45 minutes during the 3-0 first leg defeat in Lubumbashi largely due to coach Morley Byekwaso’s cautious approach to the fixture.

But with the task at hand quite phenomenal, the performance of both Otai and Muwadda could have a significant bearing on the adventurous approach Byekwaso intends to embrace in the return leg on Sunday.

In Lubumbashi, Don Bosco dominated proceedings in the first half but faded later in the second half when SCVU introduced Mawejje and Otai.

The hosts’ two full-backs Godet Masengo and Patient Mwepu struggled to contain Mawejje’s lungbursting runs and Otai’s industrious movement on either side of midfield. 

First team stars Savio Kabugo and Denis Iguma, who missed the first leg due to suspension, trained with the rest of the team yesterday and should frustrate the Congolese side’s game plan that relies on moving the ball until spaces appear in the final third to allow Zambian striker Luka Lungu find the goals.

It’s not clear as to whether Byekwaso will retain the attacking partnership of Simon Okwi and Dan Nsubuga or could consider youngster Daniel Isiagi. Caesar Sapeo is the other option.
