Teso district khadi Sheikh Musa Mutwalib has warned the Muslim community against marrying off their children who are below 18.

He said most underage girls have died during childbirth while some have suffered complications such as fistula.

“Many of the Muslims marry off their daughters as soon as they develop breasts. Although the Koran says so, it only applies to countries that are governed by the Sharia law,” he pointed out.

The Muslim leader said Muslims in Uganda should abide by the Constitution which stipulates that for a person to marry, he or she must be above 18 years of age.

The khadi was speaking to members of Teso Muslim Women Development Initiative from the seven districts of Teso at Noor Secondary School in Soroti town recently.

He urged Muslims to report to Police parents marrying off their underage children, going further to decry the habit of unacceptable dressing by some Muslim girls.

“Mothers, the dressing of our daughters is not pleasing. Why are you watching our children divert from the good norms?” he asked.
