'One dead, 7 hurt' in Mukono building collapse

MUKONO - One person has been reported killed and seven others injured after a building under construction collapsed Friday in Mukono town.

The injured, according to a statement by Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS), were taken to Mukono Health centre.

One body was hauled out of the wreckage, as the search for more survivors continues.

URCS’s Mukono branch has deployed 10 Red Cross Action teams who are supporting Police and district authorities to provide first aid services to any of the survivors, the aid body said.

The cause of the collapse is still unclear but it is understood some workers were in the kitchen at the time of the incident.

Witnesses say the number of people trapped under the rubble could rise.

The ground floor of Shades Garden has been space for a bar and a restaurant as construction of the first floor was underway.

Teams and volunteers are at the scene helping to search for any survivors.
