Boxer Martin Mubiru set for Ireland

Martin Mubiru, a 2006 Commonwealth Games bronze medalist, is among the professional boxers that are set to join Belfast-based Eastside Boxing club to step up their professional career.

But this will depend on whether they pass the medical test, a requirement before they are allowed to take part in professional boxing in Ireland.

Mubiru, formerly basd in Japan,  is currently training with a number of other boxers that include Solomon Ssessanga, Charles Mulindwa, Meddie Ssebyala and Kenneth Odeke, who are set to join the Northern Ireland-based club under renowned promoter Alan Wilton.

They are expected in Ireland in February to prepare for future international boxing contests.

The move came after Wilton – a trainer, manager and promoter – contacted an organisation called Atlantic Entertainment to see chances of him getting boxers from Africa to join his club.

Atlantic is made up of former boxer Andrew Nyakana, who is based in United States and Moses Matovu, who is also a boxer at Eastside Club.

“It was an opportunity as we were working on ways of helping Ugandan boxers try to get better fights which comes with good training opportunity.

“Most of the boxers selected are those who have the spirit to fight, are focused and talented,” said Nyakana, who last year started a school to help underprivileged kids.

Nyakana and Matovu have teamed up with Abbey Mugaayi to help in identifying those boxers that will be able to make it to Ireland.

“He is offering them an opportunity to succeed. He is going to work on all the travel cost and all the upkeep while in Ireland for three months. It is a great opportunity that we can’t miss out,” said Matovu.

Matovu last month lost the Ben Lleyemi 40-36 in a four round professional fight, which is organised by Wilton.
