'No sex before marriage' stops in church corridors

Aug 12, 2013

Shya! Those things of no sex before marriage stop in the bible and church corridors. I have heard those stories of we dated for seven years without sex, but they really bore me.

Comedian Hannington Bugingo talks about love, marriage and laughter with Carol Kasujja

Bugingo, I am told ever since you got married, you are no longer funny. What happened?
Who told you? You should come on Thursday and watch us perform; I swear if you do not laugh, I will pay you. I am still the same old funny guy. Marriage has not affected my script. I still put on dresses and skirts on stage and those are some of the things that make me funny. Stop listening to people; come and watch us.

We never see your wife. Where do you hide her?
She is undercover. She does not like to come out in the limelight so only those who are close to me get to see her. She is not like Zuena and I prefer it that way.

When was the last time you talked to your ex- girlfriend?
Eh! Let me see, it was last year. I bumped into her at a friend’s wedding. There is no way I could dodge her, we had to talk. But it was not a serious conversation. I just asked her what was going on in her life.

You seem to be a happily married man. What is the secret?
Yes, I am happy because I invest in my marriage and I value it. One thing that has kept us going is I am still myself. Even when I was dating my wife, I was myself. I would go out with my boys every weekend and she was fine with it. I never created an impression that I was rich. So when we got married, she knew the kind of man I was, and I am still that man. Pretending in marriage can bring stress.

You got a baby before getting married. Couldn’t you wait?
Shya! Those things of no sex before marriage stop in the bible and church corridors. I have heard those stories of we dated for seven years without sex, but they really bore me. Waiting was impossible for me because I am a human being. Tell me if you are also waiting for marriage.

Why do you have a password on your phone?
I have always had passwords on my computer and phone. For some reason whenever I place my phone down, people always want to go through my messages and pictures. Even you, if I left my phone here, you would also want to open it. The good thing is my wife knows the passwords. I need my privacy.

What message do you have for your friends who are getting married?
They should marry their friends and women with character. Beauty fades, but character stays. Marry someone who understands you, not someone who wants you to be like her dad. Also, ask God for direction.

When was the last time you went to church?
I am a reverend’s son. I pray every Sunday.
