Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister, Steven Kaliba, says he has resigned from his position as PM in order to contest for a Parliamentary seat.

In a message posted on his social media account, Kaliba said he would contest for the Fort Portal Municipality seat.

He said he had resigned to start campaigns in order to clinch the position of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flagbearer for the position ahead of the 2016 elections.

The seat is currently occupied by Alex Ruhunda, who is also of the NRM party.

His statement in full:

I would like to thank and praise the Lord who through the King of Tooro, members of the Tooro Supreme Council and the entire people of Tooro gave me the opportunity to serve as Prime minister/Omuhikirwa of Tooro.

It was a great honour for me to have completed my term of office and I thus give glory back to the Lord. I thank all the stakeholders who supported me during my term of office. To all the members of Orukurato Rwenesanju, Tooro kingdom cabinet and technical staff, the youth (Amachumune bitara), the business community, the Media fraternity, and the Central Government I say many thanks. Yes, together we made and shall continue to make a mark on the face of Tooro.

Can I now congratulate most sincerely my brother in Christ the incoming Prime Minister/Omuhikirwa of Tooro and wish him all the best.

I thank in special way all my supporters, well-wishers and friends for always being there for me and from the bottom of my heart and by the grace of God I will never let you down.

Finally, it’s now my greatest pleasure to inform all the people and friends of Tooro and Fort Portal Municipality in particular that I can now confidently confirm that I will this year contest for NRM MP flag bearer and proceed to contest the national parliamentary elections for 2016.

It’s my great prayer that I will be allowed to continue from where I stopped for the development of Fort Portal Municipality, Tooro and the Nation at large. God bless you! For God and my country.

Thank you
