US Ambassador to Uganda Scott H. DeLisi has extended his best wishes to Muslims in Uganda as they prepare for Ramadan on Thursday, saying "Ramadan Kareem."

Ramadan is a sacred month of fasting from dawn to dusk and is observed by adult and sane Muslims all over the world as a fourth of the five pillars of Islam.

"On behalf of the American people, I want to extend our best wishes to Muslims in Uganda on the occasion of Ramadan.  Ramadan Kareem [generous month]," DeLisi said in a statement issued on Wednesday.

He noted that Ramadan is a time when Muslims around the world reflect upon the wisdom and guidance that comes with faith.

"It is a time when families and friends gather and when meals are shared.  Ramadan offers a promise of renewal and hope for the world, while also serving as an occasion for personal reflection and intense devotion," he explained.

The ambassador also said:  "During this holy month, Muslims around the world provide support to others and, in doing so, remind us that the peaceful and prosperous future we hope to build together for Uganda must begin in our own hearts and our own communities".

He said in America, their Muslim community celebrates Ramadan in the same way as their brothers and sisters elsewhere in the Muslim world.

"America's Muslims have made extraordinary contributions to our country and Islam has long been part of America's tradition of faith.  Strikingly, in its emphasis on equality and diversity, Islam reflects core values that have shaped American society," he stated.

"In the spirit of brotherhood reflected by our shared values, permit me to wish you, your families and your friends a time of peace and renewal as you welcome the beginning of Ramadan. May God's peace be upon you."

Fasting,  is the fourth of the five pillars of Islam and is intended to help teach Muslims self-discipline, self-restraint and generosity.
