The Buganda road chief magistrate, Lillian Bucyana has set Friday to give her ruling on the bail application for local artiste Stecia Mayanja’s husband Abbas Mubiru.

Yesterday the trial magistrate set the date after the accused (Abbas Mubiru) through his lawyer Luyimbaazi Nalukoola applied for bail on grounds that his client had spent more than 48 hours in police custody.

“It is a constitutional right to apply for bail. He has a constitutional presumption of innocence,” Nalukoola pleaded.

In his bail application, Mubiru presented three sureties, Victoria Bukenya and Godfrey Ssebyala both business people dealing in mobile phones at Mutaasa Kafeero Plaza in Kampala and Andrew Kayonga 33, a city car dealer.

They all tendered in photocopies of their LC.1 letters, identity cards and passports.

Meanwhile Stecia Mayanja, shockingly, who was not among the sureties, kept on hiding, covering her face and did not attend the court proceedings.

She only depended on informers to know the proceedings in court. She was seen driving to escape cameras.

Abbas Mubiru, a land broker on Monday appeared before the Buganda road Grade One Magistrate, Joan Aciro and denied one count of obtaining  shs45.5m by false pretense from a one, Ronald Ddanze.

Prosecution alleges that between October and November 2014, in Kampala, Mubiru 33 and a resident of Katale-Bunamwaya in Wakiso district obtained the money in probe from one Ddanze pretending that he was selling to him a piece of land located at Lubowa in Wakiso district.

According to police records, it is not the first time that the accused is involved in controversies.

He (Mubiru) was earlier on arrested in Kitebi, Rubaga division after he failed to pay sh200,000 to a mobile money agent.

Police records further show that Andrew Ssekajoozi (a mobile money agent), told police that Mubiru ordered for a mobile money transaction to his wife Mayanja and one Alex Katongole, however he did not pay the sum.

Early this month, Mubiru was reportedly arrested by police in Bunamwaya for having failed to pay a debt worth over Shs 320,000.

Recently, Mayanja has also been battling with human trafficking at the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) Kireka.
