PRISCA Kobusingye graduated with a diploma in guidance and counseling at Makerere Business Training Centre (MKTC), she says in Rukoni east Ntungamo district where she comes from, the school dropout rate for girls is high and this she says is due to early pregnancies; a problem caused by lack of parental guidance.

She says if it were not for her parent's advice, she would have also gotten spoilt. She was joining bad groups and it is her parent's advice and punishments that helped her concentrate in school and it is the reason she has managed to graduate.

"My parents advised helped me to study; people now respect my family because I am educated and never gave birth at a tender age. My parents emphasised patience as an important tool for anyone to succeed and indeed it has worked," she added.

Kobusingye was among the hundreds of graduands who at MKTC Bwaise in Kawempe division. This was the fourth graduation where 788 students were awarded certificates and diplomas in various disciplines. The award ceremony took place at the Seventh Day Adventist hall in Makerere.

The executive director private sector foundation Uganda (PSFU), Gideon Badagawa; said parents are key to the success of students both at school and job world.

"When a child is poorly developed it will be very difficult to assimilate them into school and get the skills that the teachers are instilling in them, you keep on blaming schools for the child's poor performance yet the problem is the parents," he explained.

According to a study by PSFU and UNICEF, the most productive years in every one's life are the years before three. If a child's early years are not productive, even if they study and get all the degrees in the world, they can never succeed in life and this all depends on the parents.

Alphorns Kalyamalwaki a parent and resident of Ntungamo said for any child to succeed in life, parents have to play a very important role. They have to pay school fees and on top of it teach the children survival tips.

"Even if the child gets a good degree, if the upbringing is poor, then they will not succeed. No one would want to employ lazy and undisciplined people in their company. And this has to be groomed by parents," he explains.

He adds that part of what has made his children succeed in academics as compared to other children around his village in Rukoni is because of the advice and the trainings he gives them.

The principal of the institute Magambo Mugyenyi thanked parents for supporting the students through fees and guiding them.

"We have not had problems with the students and I believe the parents played their part. I advise them to continue with the same spirit of discipline, respect and hard work even when in the field," he explained.
