The tomato is the commonest, unavoidable vegetable in the world. This is because for every meal, there is a tomato.

Uganda produces tomatoes nearly across the country, however one is amazed that Uganda is not even among the top tomato producers in the world.

While Uganda boasts of over 10 common tomato varieties, there are over 7,000 different tomato varieties grown in the world.

Worldwide, 161 million metric tons of tomatoes are produced per year. And surprisingly, a small country like the Netherlands is placed comfortably among the top producers, while Uganda is not.  Netherlands produces around 805,000 metric tons of tomatoes per year. China is the leading producer of tomatoes with over 50million metric tons per year, followed by India at around 17.5million metric tons then the United States at 13.2million metric tons of tomatoes.

There are tomatoes for all occasions. According to Tomato world centre, which is the largest tomato exhibition centre in the Netherlands, there are dessert tomatoes, cock-tail tomatoes, salads, meat, chicken, juice, ketch up.
