After emerging as the only competitor to hand Egyptian Grandmaster (GM) El Gindy Essam his first defeat at the Zone 4.2 Africa Chess Championship, Uganda’s Raphael Buti now feels the sky is the limit.
The non-titled player, Buti seeded eighth in the weeklong tournament beat the tournaments seed one GM Essam in the fifth round on Tuesday before falling to the hands of another Egyptian International Master (IM) Hesham Abdelrahman in a defeat he felt was a result of over excitement following an earlier historical victory to his record.
“I was so excited after beating the only GM in the tournament and it seems it’s the same excitement that affected my performance in the next game,” Buti said as he prepared for the seventh round on Thursday.
Buti (rated 2166) will be up against Ethiopia’s Tadese Haileselassie in the seventh round this afternoon at City Oil on Kira Road in Kamwokya, Kampala.
“It’s already late for me to think of winning the tournament but all am now striving at is to win all the remaining games and atleast finish with 7 points,” he said.
Buti is currently in fourth position with 4 points out of six rounds. He is at half a point behind fellow Ugandan Candidate Master (CM) Patrick Kawuma at 4.5 points in third place.
To tally to 4 points, Buti had earlier beaten Kasaija Primulus and Hemed Mlawa from Tanzania, Kenya’s Kenneth Omolo.
Other local arch Fide Master (FM) Arthur Ssegwanyi is leading the highly contested Open category with 5.5 points followed by Egyptian’s IM Hesham Abdelrahman in second with 5 points.
Meanwhile in the ladies category, Uganda’s Ivy Amoko dropped down to second position with 4.5 points following her defeat against Egyptians Women candidate Master (WCM) Ehab Tasneem in the fourth round although recovered to beat fellow local player Goretti Angolikin later in the sixth round yesterday.
Amoko will this afternoon take on fellow Ugandan Christine Namaganda in the seventh round
