Sound media key for constructive delivery of opposition views

Opposition views should have a more constructive and effective means of delivery for all Ugandans. There is no doubt some opposition politicians have had positive thinking but what has always failed their efforts is the approach and limited appreciation of how systems work, together with propaganda in democratic societies.

Why should comedians be fronted as lead campaigners and party activists in major campaigns and rallies? The views presented should be clearly dissociated from comedy, propaganda and cheap popularity. The opposition should instead use the media platform to challenge the ruling party by showing viable alternatives, for example, in the energy sector and the fight against corruption.

To the contrary, this has been adopted by civil society organisations, which seems to make more sense than mere bickering among our political leaders. The social media should be utilised to air constructive views and criticism, like is the case in neighbouring Kenya.

There are other open ways, created by our democratic systems, which have not been exploited. The Leader of Opposition in Parliament should be able to represent a uniform policy and view of the opposition.

However, what seems to be clear is the the immature party politics prevailing, thereby rendering that position a mere office and privilege.

Some opposition members have also miserably turned civil service and work into political showdowns and this has not been a constructive means, but only leads to public dissatisfaction. What viable reason would one give, say for opposing a road project, which is of public benefit?

The opposition should identify with the achievements, but however can use them to agitate for even better and improved services through supervision, constructive criticism and evaluation, and not mere composition and frustration.

It is better for the opposition to have a uniform approach, and they could look at caucusing to harmonise positions before delivering their opinions on vital policies. It is irrelevant that different members are bound by different party resolutions.

The people should be able to clearly identify themselves with the opposition and the policies, instead of just a few comical and tough talking opposition members. In the 21st Century, we would like to see people not only with great leadership abilities, but sound ideas and knowledge of the right approach and policies as alternatives to current ones.

Therefore, utilise the media, social network and be good examples in civil service. In Uganda, taking to the streets would not be a solution because we have a turbulent political history, which people will never allow to happen again.

Therefore, in this present day, where largely  the rule of law prevails, notwithstanding divergent opinions, it’s extremely important for us to have properly defined opposition views constructively delivered.
