We often feature stories of successful business entrepreneurs; people who typically measure performance in terms of profit and returns. But there are also social entrepreneurs, people who pursue innovative solutions to social problems.

We often feature stories of successful business entrepreneurs; people who typically measure performance in terms of profit and returns. But there are also social entrepreneurs, people who pursue innovative solutions to social problems.
 
These take into account a positive return to society. Social entrepreneurship typically furthers broad social, cultural and environmental goals and is commonly associated with the voluntary and not-for-profit sectors.
 
Although we have featured entrepreneurs with this element, never before have we featured a bona fide social entrepreneur. Such a person is Maria Baryamujura, the founder and executive director of Community Based Tourism Initiatives (COBATI), a non-profit NGO that promotes and enhances the capacity of rural communities around natural, cultural and tourist circuits in Uganda to participate and benefit from tourism-related enterprises. But none of this has come on a silver platter for the 60-year-old widow, writes Stephen Ssenkaaba.
