Uchumi Supermarket outlet at Garden City  has been cleared by Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) to reopen and run it’s fast food outlet following its closure over poor hygiene

The food outlet was closed down on Thursday morning by officers from Authority who claimed that the health standards at the bakery were not up to the expected standards.

“We reopened them after they complied with the issues that led to the closure. Among others Uchumi cleaned up the chimney area and the floor and promised to change the ceiling board,” Robert Kalumba KCCA deputy Spokesperson said.

KCCA cited poor hygiene as the reason for the closure. The food court has been reopened

It was business as normal on Friday morning when Sunday Vision visited the eatery on Friday morning and customers could be seen making their orders while others enjoyed their snacks.

By the time we visited Uchumi, it country manager David Mugo was reportedly locked up in a meeting with KCCA officials.

In interview, Uchumi officials said the Authority had acted in a high handed manner. The company’s head of marketing and promotions Ronnie Kruse Ochwo said;

“KCCA was high handed in what they did. You just carry out a survey across all the malls and supermarkets and you will find out that we are actually better when it comes to hygiene matters.”

Ochwo could not rule out the possibility that a competitor could be behind the closure of the fast food outlet.

“As Uchumi, we try our best to do the best for our customers,” he added.

He invited the members of the public to freely visit their kitchen to see for themselves how standards were being maintained at Uchumi.
