Makerere to lead research on sleeping sickness

Makerere University will lead a five-year research project aimed at eliminating sleeping sickness on the African continent.

During the launch of the project in Kampala on Thursday, the lead researcher, Dr. Enock Matovu, said the project will also cover the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ivory Coast, Guinea- Bissau, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Malawi and Zambia.

Matovu said they received $4m from Welcome Trust, a UK-based charity organisation. Sleeping sickness in human beings is caused by tsetse flies, which also cause nagana in animals.
