Veteran Ugandan news anchor Dan Kyazze has died aged 72 at a hospital in Kampala.

Kyazze, who leaves behind a 50-year legacy in the industry, had spent five months bedridden, according to his son Dan Kyazze Jr.

Dan Kyazze Jr. said his father lost a long battle to cancer Thursday night.

He said they are awaiting several family members who live in the diaspora to arrive in the country so they can plan for the final send off.

Kyazze's remains will be transported to his home in Mackay zone, Nateete for a vigil on Friday night.

His rich legacy in the industry dates back to the 1960s when he started reading news on Radio Uganda and then-UTV where he spent 30 years.

In the 1990s, in the advent of FM stations, Kyazze joined Radio Akaboozi where he spent 10 years reading news in Luganda.

Finance Minister and proprietor of Radio Akaboozi, Maria Kiwanuka, said Kyazze will be dearly missed for he was part of the team that started the station.

She spoke of Kyazze as an obedient, calm and accomodative man who was prolific time-keeper.

Colleague P.K. Bossa said the elderly news reader was a fatherly figure to the employees at the station, a teacher and counsellor.
