The leadership of Uganda People's Congress (UPC) has allayed fears about the health of its party president, Dr. Olara Otunnu, saying the former United Nations diplomat is out of danger after getting involved in a car accident yesterday.

The vehicle in which Otunnu, his sister-in-law and driver were travelling had a tyre-burst, overturned numerous times, before settling on its roof.

"I spoke to him last night and thank God, he is out of danger. He doesn't know what happened, but preliminary reports indicates that a tyre burst was behind the accident," UPC Vice President, Joseph Bbosa told the media this morning.

According to Bbosa, Otunnu is currently recuperating at Lacor hospital in Gulu district.

Otunnu was one of the organizers of the Janani Luwum inaugural national memorial service on Monday which took place in his village of Mucwini, Kitgum district.

Otunnu is a relative of the slain archbishop and he was allegedly on his way to Kampala from the function that drew a host of dignitaries, including President Yoweri Museveni.

This is the second time Otunnu - a former UN Special representative for children in armed conflicts – has been involved in a car accident since ending his nearly 30-year self-imposed exile in September 2009.
