Little-known Aseka Aseke FC from Kyabazinga Market in Jinja town surprised many with three wins to lead Group A of the seventh edition of the Lawrence Makubuya Cup.

The side scooped a maximum nine points, thanks to the impressive goal-stopper Benson Wagima who conceded only once in three games.

The football tournament, which kicked off at the Mainstreet Primary School ground on Saturday, saw Aseka Aseke FC shake off their opponents.

They started with a 2-0 win over a lackluster Jinja Veterans, then followed that with a hard-fought 1-0 victory against defending champions Walukuba West A.  Next, a 2-1 win eliminated Mafumbira United from the contest, ensuring that the underdogs bag a full nine points.

'We used a funny name for the tournament so that everyone can write us off and that’s why we progressed,' said Wagima, who was outstanding in goal.

Meanwhile, Walukuba survived a looming comeback from the Veterans in a highly entertaining game that saw the defending champions win 3-2.

Action continued on Sunday with group C matches. Group B and D matches will be played next weekend to decide the quarter final teams.

Aseka Aseke (9 points) and Walukuba West A (6 points) qualified as group leaders.

Some 16 teams are taking part in the tournament sponsored by CECAFA Vice President Lawrence Mulindwa.
