Rally drivers have asked the Federation of Motorsport Clubs of Uganda (FMU) to implement the use of short distances in sections and a car tracking system.

The drivers believe that by doing so, competitions will be managed better. They made the request during a symposium held at Grand Imperial Hotel.

They also requested FMU to set up communication and medical centres in each section of competitions.

“On top of having short sections, we want a well-equipped medical centre with an ambulance in each section and a metal cutting machine in case of accidents,” one of the drivers John Barrows stated.

The drivers cited the Zirobwe accident during the Southern Motor Club rally.

It took time for the only available ambulance to reach the scene because of the long distance sections.

The drivers argued that the use of a car tracking system will enable organisers of races to monitor competitors not moving at the required speed and devise solutions.

Rogers Sirwomu, who is Musa Kabega’s co-driver, offered his views on how the car tracking system can be obtained.

“We would rather increase on the participation fees so as to acquire or hire the car tracking system,” Sirwomu said.

FMU vice president Dusman Okee (left) promised drivers during the symposium that their request will be considered.

“We are glad that you have such a forum to express your concerns,” Okee stated.

“You have raised genuine issues and we are going to handle them with urgency.”
