Police on Wednesday morning arrested former Forum for Democratic Change president Dr. Kiiza Besigye from his home at Kasangati in Wakiso district.

The preventive arrest followed a press conference where Besigye had briefed reporters his next course of action accusing the Police of curtailing his freedom of movement. He is seeking legal redress over the matter.

Besigye told reporters before the arrest that he wanted to attend the national Thanksgiving prayer service in honour of fallen First Deputy Prime Minister Eriya Kategaya at Kololo.

Police however said Besigye would use the chance to cause havoc in the city.  He is being detained at Kira Road Police station in Kampala.

Police yesterday intercepted Besigye at his home in Kasangati as he departed for court in Kampala.

Kampala North police chief, Steven Tanoi, said they had obtained information that Besigye was planning to cause mayhem in the city on his way to Buganda Road court where he faces unlawful assembly charges.

He was supposed to reappear in court today in case he is accused of managing an unlawful assembly that led to the murder of an Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) John Bosco Ariong.

Ariong was hit with a blunt object, purportedly a rock thrown from a building on Ben Kiwanuka Street, as Police dispersed a crowd of Activists mainly from the opposition political parties, who were in a procession.
