Is surgery the only option?

Dear Doctor, I have been diagnosed with ovarian cyst on the left ovary, measuring 9cm*7cm*5.5cm and a fibroid. The gyneacologist recommended surgery.

 

                                             

Dear Sarah, Ovarian cysts are functional cysts, which are pretty much common at a given time in the menstrual cycle. In many cases, ovarian cysts are small and harmless and there is likely to be no signs or symptoms. 

 

In some cases, ovarian cysts cause pain and bleeding. However, if the cyst is over 5cm in diameter, it may need to be surgically removed. Fibroids grow on different layers of the uterus and vary according to size. When they are small, or grow on the outside layer of the uterus, many women can live with them normally and have children. 

 

However, sometimes, they may interfere with one’s fertility. Probably, the gynaecologist recommended surgery because he thinks they are big and are interfering with fertility.

 

Unfortunately, you cannot take medicine to shrink them because the same medicine may affect your fertility making a better option.
