The first wife of the Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadan Mubajje, who died in a motor accident, was yesterday buried at Bugema village near Mbale town.

Hajati Zainabu Babirye, 50, died on Sunday morning in Mbale Hospital, where she was admitted after sustaining serious injuries in an accident on the Mbale- Tirinyi road.

Babirye, who was born in 1962 in Iganga district, got married to Mubajje in 1982. She is survived by 11 children, six of them girls. Babirye studied at Wante primary school before joining Bugembe Islamic institute in Jinja town, where she met and fell in love with Mubajje, who was a teacher at the institute.

Speaking at the funeral, the chairperson of the Uganda Muslim Supreme council, Anas Ssesimba, condemned the acts of people who rush to accident scenes, but end up robbing the dead and injured victims.

Ssesimba’s remarks followed allegations that Babirye jumped through the window of the vehicle after the accident, but a group of youth pounced on her, attempting to grab her handbag despite her injuries.

“We suspect Babirye could have survived had it not been for those youth,” Ssesimba said. He appealed to the Inspector General of police to deploy more police officers on highways to arrest reckless drivers and people who steal property from accident victims.

Ssesimba also called upon Bamasaba and the Police to work hand in hand to see that Kadodi dancers do not violate road users and interfere with traffic.
