Corruption is a major cause and a result of poverty around the world. It occurs at all levels of society. It affects the poorest the most, in rich or poor nations, though all elements of society are affected in some way as corruption undermines political development, democracy, economic development, the environment, people’s health and more.

The perception that corruption is rife, in public places is very high around the world, but it isn’t just in governments that corruption is found; it can permeate through all levels of society.

In recognition of the need to address this global concern, over 148 UN member states ratifi ed the United Nations Convention against Corruption in 2004.

Since then, a Day – the International Anti –corruption Day has been observed on the 9th December 2012 to take stock of the efforts undertaken to fi ght against corruption as well as raise public awareness about corruption.

This year, this day is celebrated under the theme: “ACT - Against Corruption Today”. The theme is geared towards encouraging the involvement of all sections of the society in addressing the root causes of corruption as well as strengthening state institutions’ capability to prevent or combat this crime.
