Dear Doctor,
How can I increase my sperm count?
Emma

ADear Emma,
There are many reasons why men want to increase their sperm count. First, there are men who have a hard time making  their partners pregnant because their sperm count is too low.

Secondly, semen marks the climax of a happy sexual encounter to many men and a great production is perceived as a sign of virility. The fact is that without the right amount of semen, everything falls apart.

However, you can be helped. If you smoke or take alcohol regularly, quit. Smoking reduces sperm count and motility, reducing the sperm lifetime and may also cause chromosomal changes that affect one’s offspring. Equally, alcohol lowers the production of sperm and testosterone, a hormone produced by the testes; responsible for the development of male secondary sex characteristics.

Exercising regularly can help. But the intensity and duration should be moderate and under supervision. Excessive physical exercise has a negative influence on fertility.

Try to lose excess weight, as it tends to cause testosterone/oestrogen imbalance. Eat nutritious foods low in fat and high in protein, vegetables and whole grains.

Reduce caffeine intake and avoid excessive usage of lubricants and vaginal tablets as they may also cause sperm death. Protect your testicles from high temperatures. Have a steam bath once in a while. Wear loose underwear.

Do not stress yourself and pay attention to your physical and mental health. Physical fitness and mental relaxation improve male fertility. If there is need for anabolic steroids (drugs that mimic the effects of testosterone), take them only under the guidance of a doctor, as they can also lead to Azoospermia.

Take foods rich in zinc and in vitamins C, A and E. Vitamins help in synthesis, development and maintenance of the normal sperms and they help to avoid clumping of sperms.

It is important to maintain good sexual health. See a doctor for examination.
