FASHION COURT: Help, my girl's hair stinks

Nov 16, 2012

My girlfriend plaits her hair a lot. She has lost a lot of hair at the fore-line and sometimes her hair does not smell good.

This is a tricky situation that may lead to lots of suspicion. When a woman plaits her hair, it is usually for convenience and giving hair a break from the many salon visits. But that should not mean mistreating your hair with the claim that you have to extract every shilling spent on it.

Plaited hair has to be treated well. It needs treatment at least twice a month. Do a steam treatment bi-monthly.
Unfortunately, keeping hair plaited for long may not be as good as many people think. The hair may be left weak, or pulled out at the roots which can lead to balding, especially at the hairline.

The scalp naturally produces oils that are meant to moisturise hair follicles and also prevent it from scaling.
But once this is trapped in by covering the hair, it collects dust and could lead to little or no hair growth. However convenient the weave is, one should not wear it for long.

Washing hair once a week frees it from dirt build up and possible infection of the pores. Use a shampoo to wash the hair and dry it before styling the braids or weave. That way, the hair will not smell.

Loss of hair at the fore line is due to many causes, but exerting a lot of pressure through tight styling is one cause. Because weaves require cornrows before they are woven on to the head, these, when made too tight pull out strands of hair at the root.
