On the occasion of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the independence of Uganda, the Boards of Governors and Trustees, members and staff of Milton Obote Foundation (MOF) would like to join their fellow citizens in marking this signifi cant occasion by refl ecting on the nation’s past achievements and tribulations.

There is need to focus on creating a new type of society that will ensure democratic governance, political stability and equal opportunity for every Ugandan. 

We recognize and highlight the contributions made by the Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC) under the Leadership of Dr. Apollo Milton Obote and call upon all Ugandans to resolve, in the words of Milton Obote, “to work for Uganda”.

Dr. Obote joined the Uganda National Congress (UNC) in 1956 and then plunged into Uganda politics. He was nominated to the Legislative Council (Legco) in 1957 and was returned to the Council as an elected member in 1958.

Following the merger of UNC and Uganda Peoples Union (UPU) to form Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC) in March 1960, Dr. Apollo Milton Obote was elected President of the new Party. 

The challenge that faced political leaders then was to forge a united front to fi ght for and achieve independence. Unity was necessary to dismantle the system of divide and rule established by the British. Read more

Animal Resources

The UPC Government initiated and drew up programmes for livestock, dairy and poultry production of a magnitude and standard unparalled anywhere in the emerging African countries in the sixties. 

The Government stepped up cattle breeding, established ranches, encouraged large-scale poultry farming, introduced a network of milk cooling plants which operated effi ciently throughout the country.

The UPC Government built Meat Packers in Soroti, which was the second largest in Africa with the installed capacity to crush 2000 animals per day. Bones, horns, hooves etc were ground and converted into fertilizers.

Cooperatives and Marketing

The UPC Government supported and promoted cooperatives as a means of accelerating economic development and growth through extension of credit facilities by the Co-operative Bank and Uganda Commercial Bank. 

The Coffee and Lint Marketing Boards were strengthened and mandated to look for international competitive markets. Produce Marketing Board was established to handle produce. Read more
