It was Sir Winston Churchill, former British Prime Minister, who in 1909 called Uganda “the Pearl of Africa”. Over 100 years later, Lonely Planet, the global authority on tourism, voted Uganda the top destination for 2012, coincidentally the same year Uganda has won an Olympic Gold medal. We have also discovered 40% more oil deposits.
These developments and more have set in motion a sense of patriotism, which dictates that there has never been a better time to be a Uganda than now as the country prepares to celebrate its Golden Jubilee.
It is in this context that Ugandans in Kenya have come together to honour this historic achievement through a celebration of song, dance and food, which are characteristic of our existence.
The vibe and excitement exuded by the Ugandans in the many meetings, which have been held in Nairobi, to prepare for this celebration is magnetic and can perhaps only be matched by the ululations and joys felt at the birth of a first–born child to a newly wedded couple.
I welcome all Ugandans to this celebration and I urge all to mellow in the cultural and social cohesion that this occasion brings. We now talk of Nandujja and the Planets, matooke, malewa, ebitakuri, ebinyebwa, akalo – what a great feeling!
Ugandans from all walks of life, congratulations on our nation’s Golden Jubilee.

The High Commission has orgarnised festivities to commemorate the 50 years of Independence scheduled for Saturday October 6, 2012 at the Kenya School of Monetary Studies in Nairobi.
Meanwhile, the Uganda High Commission in Rwanda has organised a fete celebrating Uganda’s 50th independence anniversary on Saturday October 6 at the Kigali Serena Hotel. Richard Kabonero, the High Commissioner, said hundreds of Ugandans from Kampala, including ministers will attend.
