(UPDATE) - Police have arrested Forum for Democratic Change leader, Dr. Kizza Besigye and is now being held at the Central Police Station in Kampala.

Besigye was arrested Monday in downtown Kampala in his attempt to address vendors at Kiseka market.

The arrest of the FDC politician comes in the wake of a move by Police to block some members of the opposition from holding planned rallies around Kampala.

As Besigye planned to hold a rally at the Constitutional Square, Kampala mayor Erias Lukwago intended to tour the New Taxi Park.

Last week, Kampala Capital City Authority emptied the New Taxi Park to allow for major repairs.

The two political leaders who command a huge following have since been arrested.

What is known is that the FDC president is now being held at Central Police Station in the office of DPC Kampala, James Ruhweza.

Our reporter at the police station says there is still calm around the area and the neighbouring Constitutional Square.

Police had Monday morning deployed heavily at Besigye's home in Kasangati in Wakiso district in a move to block him from traveling to town to hold his planned rally.

But he managed to elude the security officials to a then undisclosed location until his arrest by police at the city market about an hour later.
