The Miss Tourism beauty pageant is back with a horde of adjustments tailored to make for a blissful event come the finale and among them, the eastern region preliminary slated to take place in Mbale.
The event, according to Steve Waiswa, the chief executive of Kakungulu Safaris Limited, the tourism and culture promotion company that’s running the eastern pageant, is an annual beauty pageant that hinges on feminine beauty, fashion/ design, intellect and elegance to bring forth the immense tourism potential that lies untapped in the region.

“Under the theme “Our Beauty, our Heritage, our Pride”, the contestants, 15 ladies representing the diverse geographies and cultures within the region have already been identified, profiled and are already undergoing a non-resident boot camp to enrich their etiquette, performing arts, composure, public speech, tourism understanding among others,” said Steve.
Starting mid-July and stretching into early August’2014, the contestants toured a horde of tourist sites and hotels in the region to apply them in a real life tour situation, learning about the sites, their locations and unique attractions amid having their own fun.

The sites visited included, among others, the source of the Nile in Jinja, Sipi falls in Kapchorwa, Wanale ranges, Mt Elgon National Park, all in Mbale, Nyero rock paintings, lake Bisina which are both in Teso and Kidepo National Park in Karamoja.
Notably, however, is that the proceeds of the beauty pageant will be donated to the Mbale main hospital maternity ward and Napak district.
The Mbale main hospital maternity ward is being donated to because, according to state inspections and local complaints, it doesn’t have sufficient facilities to work to the satisfaction of local demand hence, as portrayed in reports, leaving mothers and newly born babies in despair while Napak district’s donations will be because of the droughts and the drought-caused famine catastrophe.
The event will be hosted at Mt. Elgon Hotel on 23rd August’ 2014 where activities like cat walking, chatting with the model contestants and guests will be treated to varied entertainment in addition to the pageant including cultural dances, presentations from exotic cultures existing within our communities, documentary show of the contestant boot camp, tourism sites visited, service providers used and CSR activities after which the winner of the pageant will be announced to take part in the grand finale to be held at Serena hotel on October 17, 2014.
