Children should be given the opportunity to learn to work for themselves other than spoon-feeding them, the president of Peoples ‘Progressive Party, Jaberi Bibandi Ssali has said.

Bidandi who was addressing pupils of Kabojja, Kitanate, Kampala Junior, Kampala Parents and Hillside primary school said that parents should give the children a chance to learn not only at school but from other people and places.

He told the school children who had attended a holiday camp at the Kiwatule Recreation Centre that they should be ready to experience life in places away from home which gives them the courage to meet the challenges in life.

The children had just attended a three-day camp where they were trained in basic skills of body hygiene, sex education, reproductive health and general behavior while in school and their communities.

On her part, the director of the Hoils Boot Campers, Belinda Banya, said the aim of the camp was to train children aged between seven and 17 in various life skills.

The participants are normally drawn from different schools every holiday and are brought together to learn how to prepare food, learning house chores like doing laundry, washing dishes and bathing themselves.

“We bring children together and expose them to different activities they are likely to meet in the future,” said Banya.

“Most of these children are from homes of working mothers who don’t have time to train their children.”

All the while, the campers also had an opportunity to share their own experiences of where they come from.
