The rugby union has unanimously endorsed a 4-year term of office for the executive, raising it from the current two years.

The members argued that it will help in planning and implementing of development strategies.

However the new arrangement will only start after the polls due next year, after the two-year term for the current executive led by William Blick expires.

On Saturday the assembly passed the amendment in the constitution, proposed by Entebbe Mongers’ Oscar Olaro and seconded by Andrew Owor from Kyadondo club.

Maybe to show that it was overdue, even members of the rival faction to the current leadership welcomed the move. Sam Ahamya, the Kampala Rugby Club (KRUFC) secretary and former director of rugby at Pirates club was all praises.

“The principle is okay, it helps the executive make use of the Bamburi, Elgon Cup and Victoria Cup tournaments to expose and gauge the players for the World Cup qualifiers,” Ahamya stated.

At last year’s union polls, Ahamya and his group were in support of KRUFC president Steven Ojambo ‘aka’ Foxy who wanted to oust Blick and have been on the opposition since then.

Ahamya explained that KRUFC supports the amendment and policies because of their advantages in the development of the game and not merely on political grounds.

He urged the executive to set up structures and implement strategies for the development of the sport that will ensure continuity of the national teams.

G4S Pirates chairman George Mbalu had originally bitterly opposed the amendment.
