Basaliza, Akurut named human rights commissioners

The President has appointed Col. Stephen Basaliza and Violet Akurut commissioners of the national Rights body.

President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Col. Stephen Basaliza and Violet Akurut Adome commissioners of the Uganda Human Rights Commission.

The two will boost the capacity of the Commission which has for the last two years had vacant positions. They were sworn Friday by the Chief Justice Benjamin Odoki and immediately assumed office.

They bring a wealth of experience in management and human rights to the Commission.  Col. Basaliza has served in the Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces as Director of Human Rights (2007 -2010) and in the Ministry of Defence (1997 - 2001) after which  he joined Parliament as MP for Burahya (2001 - 2006).

Akurut on the other hand was a Co-ordinator with the Women of Uganda Network (WOUGNET), Transform Uganda and ANPPCAN-Uganda.

The two are joining commissioners Med Kaggwa Sozi (Chairman) Mariam Fauzat Wangadya, Dr Katebalirwe Amooti Wa Irumba, Joseph Etima and Agaba Maguru.
