The annual Mayombo Memorial Golf Open ended on Saturday with Tooro Golf Club players winning most of the trophies.

The annual tournament is in memory of former defence permanent secretary and Vision Group board chairman Brigadier Noble Mayombo who died five years ago. He was also a big promoter of Tooro Club.

Ronald Rugumayo fired 68 gross to become the overall winner, beating national teammate Adolf Muhumuza by a single shot.

The event attracted 70 players from Entebbe, Jinja, Kilembe, Lugazi and Tooro Golf Club, the hosts.

Mayombo was never a golfer but a darling of Tooro golfers and often presided over tee off ceremonies at the Fort Portal based club.

Tooro club chairman Bob Rubaale said they intend to further raise the profile of the event. He said they will continue to cherish the fallen soldier for the support he rendered to the club.

“We cherish the late Mayombo for the enormous support to Tooro club and he will always be treasured as our hero,” Rubale said.

Closing the event, the Chief of Defence Forces General Aronda Nyakairima described the fallen brigadier as patriotic and a hard working officer. He also pointed out that Mayombo started the culture of taking the army to serve in neighbouring communities.

The army chief hailed Tooro club for remembering Mayombo using golf.
