LDC gets new director

UGANDA Law Reform Commission (ULRC) Executive Secretary, Frank Othembi has been appointed Law Development Centre's (LDC) new director.

Othembo was appointed last week by the LDC's management committee and approved by the Attorney General.
"He will start his four- year term on May 1, 2012. His contract is renewable depending on his performance. We expect a lot from him given his experience," Hamis Lukyamuzi the Centre's publicist said.

Othemo is expected to resign his job from URLC on April 30 to assume his new role. Othembo replaces Dr. Elijah Wante who retired last month.  Wante joined the Centre in 1974 as an assistant lecturer and rose through the ranks to become director in 1999.

Lukyamuzi said the position which attracted two candidates, was advertised after management failed to renew Wante’s contract.

Othembo competed with Florence Nakachwa Dollo , the former acting deputy director to take up the top position. The management also appointed Nakachwa a a substantive deputy director.

Lukyamuzi said any one to be appointed the Centre's director must be at the level of a High Court Judge with a good reputation and integrity.

Othembi served as Buganda Road Court Chief Magistrate in 2002 and later joined the Judicial Service Commission as secretary before joining ULRC.
