THE final of the Uganda Cup on May 28 will be played in Northern Uganda for the first time in the history of the second biggest cup competition.
FUFA announced Wednesday that they had decided to take the final to Pece Stadium in Gulu to make a difference with the previous finals.
This will be the first time for the finals to be held outside Kampala region since the early 1980's when it was held in Jinja.
Gulu beat off competition from Mbarara, Jinja and Fort Portal which FUFA had lined to stage the competition but its competitions committee secretary Decolas Kiiza told the weekly press conference at Mengo yesterday that Pece was the best pick.
"We chose Pece because Acholi region is a big supporter of football in Uganda. They also support our sponsors' products. Besides the region needed affirmative action," Kiiza explained.
FUFA hopes to rotate the final among its football regions as a way to promote football development countrywide.
Draws for the group of 16 involving Boroboro, Bunamwaya, CRO, Jinja Municipal, Kiraka United, URA, Masaka LC, Maroons, Misindye, Villa and Police football clubs among others will be made in Kampala on Thursday.
