VP Ssekandi meets city taxi drivers

Vice - President Edward Ssekandi Tuesday convened a meeting of taxi drivers to solve their grievances.
The meeting is taking place at his office in Kampala.

This after over 50 drivers on Monday stormed Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) headquarters after tip off that the authority officials were in a closed door meeting with some UTODA officials.

The storming of KCCA offices was masterminded by leaders of Drivers and Conductors Central Association (DACCA) and the National Union of Taxi Operators (NUTO).

The drivers found their way into the internal audit and revenue collection committee in the afternoon, paralyzing business.

The angry drivers accused KCCA officials of trying to reinstate UTODA to manage taxi business in the city without their consent.

 “We rather pay the sh120, 000 to KCCA than being governed by UTODA officials. I suffered during their tenure,” said Joseph Ssemati, a driver at Muyenga stage, Old Taxi Park.

After verbal exchange with committee members, Apollo Mugume the committee chairman allowed the drivers to air out their grievances.

Drivers reiterated their position to the proposal of a joint committee with UTODA, in revenue collection and management of the taxi parks and stages.
