THE Race of Championship Sprint on January 24 will see motor rally action return to the exciting Garuga double track circuit after five years.

Uganda Motocross Club, which leased the land and restricted it to motocross since 2004, has now designed a motor racing track. The sprint that will run alongside a motocross race will mark the inauguration of the redesigned race track.

Co-driver George Semakula who designed the track with a new bridge said it is more challenging than the previous one. The 1.7km track has two stretches and several tight corners.

“Previously the motorcycle track would cross the motor rally path but that’s no more. There are no more safety concerns. It’s something exciting which competitors and spectators will enjoy,” Semakula remarked.

“It will test the skill of competitors. I would advise drivers to practice, it’s quite challenging and exciting as well,” he warned.

Semakula who is also the coordinator for the sprint said 30 drivers have already expressed interest in the event. Registration opens today.

The 2010 season opener will be spiced up with a music show featuring several local artistes.

Shell Uganda, UAP Insurance, IAA, Jobiah Hotel, Moonberg Lager, Fire and Safety Appliances, Gguma Stationers and Paper Suppliers and Yamaha are sponsoring the event.
