THE Aswa MP, Reagan Ronald Okumu, has appealed to the church to help Ugandans fight for their rights.

Okumu asked Ugandans, especially the people of northern Uganda, to unite for peace and development.

He told them to desist from attitudes that divide them along the lines of religion, tribe, political affiliation.

“If the church did not help resolve the wars in northern Uganda, I do not know where we would be today. Let us forget about history where we used to kill each other. Unless we realise there is need for political unity, we shall not develop,” Okumu said.

The MP was on Friday addressing a gathering at Ediofe grounds in Arua municipality to mark the 2010 Peace Week, an annual event organised by the Gulu Archdiocese.

The Arua Municipality Woman MP, Christine Abia, commended Okumu and religious leaders in the north for their effort in helping rebuild confidence among the people in the region.

This, she said, had encouraged them to leave the internally displaced persons camps and voluntarily return to their villages.

Abia stressed the need for the people in the north to invest in the education of their children as they were the human resources, wealth and hope for the future.

She disclosed that only 8.7% of the children from northern Uganda are enrolled in universities throughout the country.

She attacked the men, accusing them of slowing down the economy of the region by drinking alcohol and playing cards all day instead of looking for work to boost their household incomes.

“Women do all the housework while men do nothing but wait for food to be brought to them,” Abia said.
