Dear Doctor,
Is it possible for someone to develop epilepsy during adulthood?
Sara

Dear Sara,
EPILEPSY is a chronic disorder characterized by fits that are usually triggered by excessive stimulation of the brain. This condition is usually secondary to damage to the brain which may occur at any time, even during adulthood.

Epilepsy during childhood may be a result of infections during pregnancy and around the time of delivery. Physical damage to the brain can also occur during labour.

Brain injuries and serious infections may also cause residual damage to different parts of the brain resulting into epileptic fits in adults.

The damaged parts of the brain send abnormal signals which may spread to other parts of the brain causing fits. The fits are usually brought on by triggering factors such as excessive physical activity, stress, quick movements and flash lights.

These should be avoided. Medications are useful to control fitting.
