Time to embrace vocational training

EDITOR—In Uganda, education is mainly theoretical throughout one’s early learning years. At the time of graduation, many students possess the qualifications, but cannot do anything practical. They, therefore, become job seekers since they cannot start their own businesses.

On the contrary, many businessmen start from scratch and endure all hardships to see their business grow and this they achieve over time.
Educated people are impatient and despise jobs, wanting fat salaries to get rich fast. No wonder many of them are out on the streets searching for jobs, forgetting that they can start their own businesses.
Time has come for the Government to reduce on the academic years of study and replace them with vocational training to give students practical skills.
Secondly, certificates attained in vocational training should be given the same value and recognition as those awarded for diplomas and degrees in academic fields.
Emphasising vocational training will increase the number of entrepreneurs that the country badly needs, hence reducing on job seekers.
